How to Pose Naturally in Photos (Even If You Feel Awkward)
“I never know what to do with my hands.”
“Do I smile? Do I not smile?”
“Will I look weird if I just… stand there?”
If you’ve ever felt this way in front of a camera—you’re not alone! Most people aren’t professional models, and even the most photogenic folks sometimes feel awkward when it’s time to pose.
The good news? You don’t need to “pose” to look great—you just need to feel comfortable. As a photographer, it’s my job to help guide you into natural, flattering positions that feel like you. But if you’re wondering how to prepare, here are my favorite tips for looking relaxed and natural in photos:
1. Start With Movement
Standing still can feel stiff. Try walking slowly, swaying side to side, or shifting your weight from one foot to the other. A tiny bit of motion makes a huge difference—your body relaxes, and your expression softens.
Bonus tip: Walk toward the camera, then look off to the side or over your shoulder. It creates an easy, candid feel.
2. Don’t Freeze Your Face
Natural expressions come from feeling something—not from holding a “photo smile.” Think about someone you love, laugh at something your kid said this morning, or smile with your eyes instead of just your mouth. I’ll often give you a prompt or say something silly to spark a genuine reaction.
Try this: Breathe out slowly right before the shutter clicks—it relaxes your face and posture.
3. Use Your Hands—Really!
Instead of letting your arms hang stiffly at your sides, give them something to do:
Gently place a hand in your pocket or on your hip
Cross your arms loosely
Hold onto a jacket, accessory, or a loved one
If it’s a family or couple session—touch, cuddle, hold hands, tickle!
4. Mind Your Posture (But Don’t Overthink It)
Think “tall and open,” not “rigid and upright.”
Lengthen your spine
Drop your shoulders
Slightly angle your body rather than facing the camera straight-on
Push your chin forward just a little for a flattering neck and jawline
Don’t worry—I’ll coach you through this. It’s easier than it sounds!
5. Embrace the Imperfect Moments
Some of the best photos happen between the poses—when you’re laughing, fixing your hair, or wrangling your toddler. Let go of the pressure to look “perfect.” The goal is to look like yourself, feeling good in your skin.
Most Importantly: You’re More Photogenic Than You Think
When you’re relaxed, having fun, and connecting with the people around you, it shows. You don’t need to “pose”—you just need to be present. I’ll guide you every step of the way and capture the beautiful in-between moments that make your photos feel real.
