5 Tips for Family Photos at Golden Hour

Golden hour—the dreamy time just after sunrise or just before sunset—is every photographer’s favorite light for a reason. The sun is soft and warm, the shadows are gentle, and everything seems to glow. It’s the perfect setting for relaxed, connected, and beautifully lit family photos.

If you’ve booked a golden hour session (or are thinking about it), here are 5 tips to help you make the most of that magical light.

1. Plan to Arrive Early

Golden hour moves fast, and those gorgeous tones don’t last forever. Aim to arrive 10–15 minutes early so there’s time to settle in, brush off crumbs, adjust outfits, and ease into the shoot without stress. A calm start sets the tone for joyful, connected photos.

2. Keep Wardrobe Light and Airy

Soft, neutral colors—like creams, pastels, earth tones, and muted blues—look stunning in golden light. Avoid anything too bright or neon, which can cast strange colors onto skin. Flowy dresses, linen shirts, and cozy layers add movement and texture that catch the light beautifully.

3. Expect Movement and Play

Golden hour is ideal for natural, candid moments—think piggyback rides, hand-holding walks, and snuggles. Don’t worry about perfect poses. Some of the best photos come from spontaneous giggles and in-between moments.

4. Bring Snacks (and Patience)

If your session is around sunset, it may overlap with dinner or bedtime for little ones. Pack a few mess-free snacks (think dry cereal or apple slices), and come prepared for some silliness and flexibility. I’ll work quickly to capture the magic before anyone gets too hangry!

5. Trust the Glow

That golden light might start out subtle and then suddenly bloom into something incredible. Even if it seems dim or cloudy at first—hang in there. Golden hour has a way of surprising us with the most magical light just when we need it.
