How to Get Your Kids Ready (and Excited!) for a Family Photoshoot - with Free Downloadable Guide for Parents!

Let’s be honest: getting kids ready for a family photoshoot can feel a little… daunting. Will they cooperate? Will they smile? Will they mysteriously refuse to wear shoes five minutes before you leave the house? As a family photographer—and a firm believer that photo sessions should be fun—I’ve learned a few tried-and-true tips to help get your kids excited, comfortable, and even looking forward to picture day. Check out my top tips below, and download my free How To Get Your Kids Ready for a Family Photoshoot checklist!

1. Talk It Up in a Positive Way

Start setting the tone a few days before the shoot by talking about it like an adventure. Avoid saying things like “you have to be on your best behavior” or “you better smile,” and instead say things like:

  • “We’re going to have fun taking pictures together!”

  • “We’re meeting Shayna, and she’s super fun and silly!”

  • “We’ll play games, snuggle, and you might even get to run around!”

Framing the session as something lighthearted and enjoyable helps lower pressure and builds excitement.

2. Let Them Be Involved

Give your kids a little ownership in the process:

  • Let them help choose between two outfits you’ve already approved.

  • Ask which toy or book they might want to bring in the car.

  • If they’re older, let them know we might do some “cool” or “silly” poses just for them.

Kids love feeling like they’re part of the plan instead of being told exactly what to do.

3. Make Sure They’re Fed and Rested

Photoshoot time = snack time. Seriously. A well-fed kid is a happy kid, so plan meals and naps accordingly. Bring non-messy snacks and water just in case anyone gets hungry mid-session (and don’t worry, I can Photoshop out a goldfish cracker if needed).

4. Bring Comfort Items (If Needed)

A favorite stuffed animal, lovey, or blanket can be a great comfort item—and sometimes even makes an adorable cameo in a photo. If we don’t need it, no harm done. But if it helps them feel safe and at ease, it’s totally worth it.

5. Keep Expectations Flexible

It’s normal for kids to need a little time to warm up. I’ll never force a pose or a smile. Instead, I follow their lead, play games, and use prompts that feel natural. Some of the best photos come from in-between moments—hugs, giggles, and genuine connection.

6. Celebrate After

Plan a small treat after the shoot, whether it’s ice cream, a trip to the park, or even just extra playtime. Let your kids know how proud you are of them, and they’ll associate photo day with fun and celebration.

Happy Kids = Beautiful Photos

Your session doesn’t need to be “perfect” to be magical. It just needs to feel true to your family. My goal is always to create a relaxed, joyful space where your kids can be themselves—and where we capture the kind of moments you’ll treasure forever.
