What to Wear for Family Photos: A Guide to Looking Great & Feeling Comfortable
One of the most common questions I get as a family photographer is: “What should we wear for our session?” And it’s a great question! The right outfits can elevate your photos, add personality, and help everyone feel confident and relaxed. When you book a photoshoot with me, you will receive a complete Style Guide to help you pick the perfect outfits for your session’s season, location and overall vibe. And I am always here to help guide you, send Pinterest boards and color palettes for inspiration, and brainstorm ideas together.
Here are my top tips for choosing what to wear for your family photos—stress-free.
1. Start with a Color Palette
Instead of trying to match outfits exactly, pick a color palette of 3-4 complementary colors. Think soft neutrals with a pop of color (like cream, blush, olive, and mustard), or cool tones like navy, gray, and light blue. Choose tones that fit the season and the location. See some of my favorite color palettes above!
2. Coordinate, Don’t Match
Gone are the days of everyone in white shirts and jeans. Instead, aim for a coordinated look—mixing textures, patterns, and tones that feel cohesive without being identical. This creates visual interest and lets everyone’s personality shine.
3. Choose Comfortable, Timeless Pieces
Go for clothes that you can move in, sit in, and snuggle your kids in. Avoid anything too trendy that might feel outdated in a year or two. Flowy dresses, button-downs, soft knits, and casual layers all work beautifully.
4. Think About Your Location
Your outfits should complement the setting. Planning a session in a golden field? Earthy colors work great. Beach session? Soft blues and whites always look beautiful. Urban vibe? Add a little edge with darker tones and denim.
5. Avoid Logos and Distracting Patterns
Skip anything with large logos, text, or bold, busy prints that can pull focus away from your faces and connection. Small patterns, textures (like lace or corduroy), or solid colors are perfect.
6. Consider the Little Details
Don’t forget shoes, accessories, and layers! These elements help tie your look together. For little ones, barefoot is always a sweet and timeless option if the weather and location allow.
7. Plan Ahead (and Ask for Help!)
Lay out everyone’s outfits a few days in advance to see how the colors and styles work together. And if you need help—I’ve got you! I love helping clients put together outfits and am always happy to send inspiration or create a personalized Pinterest board for inspiration..
And lastly: Be You
The most important thing is that your outfits reflect you. The goal is to capture your family as you are—connected, loving, and completely yourselves. When you feel good in what you’re wearing, that confidence shines through in every photo.
Need help planning your next session? I’d love to guide you through every step, from outfit ideas to location scouting. Let’s create something beautiful together!
Yours,
Shayna
